A brick $4$cm thick is placed so as to block a carriage wheel. If the distance of the brick from the point of contact of the wheel and thre ground is $10$cm, find the radius of the wheel.

Sketch the wheel, the ground and the brick. Draw a right angled triangle with vertices at (a) the centre of the wheel; (b) the point where the wheel contacts the brick, and (c) the point 4 cm above the point where the wheel meets the ground. Point (c) is at the same horizontal level as the point where the wheel contacts the brick, because the brick is 4cm thick.
If the radius of the wheel is $r$, what are the lengths of the sides of this triangle ? Use Pythagoras's theorem to find an equation involving $r$. Now solve this equation to find the value of $r$.

If we draw a right triangle with the radius going from the brick to the center of the wheel being the hypotenuse, one side going from the brick parallel to the ground until it meets with the vertical radius, then we get a triangle with hypotenuse R, one side 10 and the other side R-4. $R^2=(R-4)^2+10^2$ solving for R gives 116/8 which is 14.5.
