Drupal doesn't seem to utilize database slaves

We are using an AWS RDS cluster for our Drupal databases.

Our Drupal configuration for $databases consist of a default and a slave, but when I look at the usage(1), it seems like Drupal never uses the slave.
Is that just because it suffices with the master, or could we lack configuration?

$databases = array(
'default' => array(
'default' => array(
'driver' => $_ENV['DatabaseDriver'],
'host' => $_ENV['DatabaseHostMaster'],
'database' => $_ENV['DatabaseName'],
'username' => $_ENV['DatabaseUsername'],
'password' => $_ENV['DatabasePassword']
)
)
);

if (!empty($_ENV['DatabaseHostSlave'])) {
$databases['default']['slave'] = array(
'driver' => $_ENV['DatabaseDriver'],
'host' => $_ENV['DatabaseHostSlave'],
'database' => $_ENV['DatabaseName'],
'username' => $_ENV['DatabaseUsername'],
'password' => $_ENV['DatabasePassword']
);
}

We use a mix of Drupal 7 and 8.
