水平分枝




水平分枝[1]（horizontal branch[1]）とは、恒星進化論の段階において、恒星の質量が太陽質量と同じくらいになる巨星分枝の直後にくる段階である。水平分枝にある恒星は、核でのトリプルアルファ反応によるヘリウム原子核の核融合と核の周りの外殻での陽子-陽子連鎖反応をエネルギー源とする。「水平分枝」という名前は、ヘルツシュプルング・ラッセル図においておおよそ水平線上に位置しているためである。多くの水平分枝の恒星は脈動し、こと座RR型変光星として知られている。


HB星が種族IIに属しているのに対して、比較的若い種族Iのカウンターパートをレッドクランプという。水平分枝星の光度は中心のヘリウム燃焼と水素燃焼殻で発生したエネルギーに依存するが、これはヘリウム核の質量で決まる[2]。ヘリウム核の質量はヘリウムフラッシュの起こる時点の質量で一定なので、星の光度は質量に依存しない。しかし表面温度と半径は外層の質量と金属量によって敏感に変化する。金属量が多い星に水平分枝が見られないのはガスの不透明度が大きいため半径が大きく表面温度が低いのでHR図上で水平方向にほとんど移動しない。よって種族Iでは見られない[2]。
