Postgresql except with like-filtering

0

I have a table with a trigger that populates a text column with space delimited search critera for the row, eg "Opel Astra 2.0" from the manufacturer, model, engine_size colums. I can essentially query with "Opel 2.0" by doing a

select c.*
from car c
where not exists (
select unnest(string_to_array('Opel 2.0', ' ')) except
select unnest(string_to_array(c.search_criteria, ' '))
)

but I've found no way to make wildcards match so that I could search just for 'Ope' and get a hit on the Opel.

I've also tried something like

exists  (
select *
from
unnest(array_remove(string_to_array('Opel 2.0', ' '), '')) a,
unnest(array_remove(string_to_array(c.search_criteria, ' '), '')) b
where b like '%' || a|| '%'
)

but that solution is "or" instead of "and" even though wildcards work.

Any suggestions for a "generic search" like this?

Thanks in advance,
Nik
