Alphabetical ordering in project view

I'm trying to write a plugin that shows module groups mixed together with modules, using alphabetical ordering. Instead of the default behavior that uses alphabetical ordering but keeps module group nodes separated from modules, i.e. all the groups are shown before the modules instead of being mixed together.

I tried to work with com.intellij.ide.projectView.TreeStructureProvider but with no success. I override the modify method returning a collection that is properly ordered but the IDE seems to perform ordering by itself later on since my ordering isn't being used in the project view.

Is it possible to achieve the desired result?
In particular I'm interested on which extension point to act on.
