少年時代・青年時代
マーク・アーモンドは1957年7月9日に、イギリス のリバプールとブラックプールの間にある、ランカシャー海岸に面したサウスポートで、サンドラ・マリー・アーモンド(旧姓Dieson)とピーター・ジョン・シンクレア・アーモンドの子供として生まれた。14歳の時に遭遇した自動車事故のため、左耳の聴力をほぼ失う障害が残った。彼がグラマー・スクールの生徒だった頃から、父がアルコール中毒となり、マークは音楽に慰めを見いだすようになった。彼はスコット・ウォーカー、マーク・ボラン、ブライアン・イーノ、デヴィッド・ボウイのファンであった。
音楽の影響
少年時代のマークは彼の両親のレコードコレクション、特に母の「Let's Dance」（クリス・モンテス）、The Twist（チャビー・チェッカー)、そして父のコレクションである、デイブ・ブルベックとエルサ・キットなどを聞いていた。

ソフト・セルは1984年、最後の4thアルバム"The Last Night in Sodom"のリリース後解散したが、2001年に再結成し、"Cruelty without Beauty"を2002年に発表している。これには、シングル"ザ・ナイト"(全英39位)が含まれる。
アーモンドのソロ活動での最大ヒットは、1989年、往年のスター歌手ジーン・ピットニーとの共演でのカバー曲"Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart"(全英1位)である。また、1991年にはデイヴィッド・マクウィリアムスの"The Days of Pearly Spence",が全英4位、1985年にはジミー・ソマーヴィルとブロンスキ・ビートと共にドナ・サマーの'I Feel Loveをカバーして全英3位のヒットを記録している。
