Assuming the following:

const exphbs = require('exphbs');

To manually register a helper, use this:

const handlebars = exphbs.handlebars;

handlebars.registerHelper('hello', function() {
return new handlebars.SafeString('Hello!');
});

Taken from the fine manual.
