AWS DynamoDB with NodeJS SDK: 600ms response time for a simple query?
I just spin up an EC2 instance in ap-southeast-1
, install NodeJS v8.10.0 and run this snippet (gotten from here):
const {DynamoDB} = require('@aws-sdk/client-dynamodb-v2-node');
async function example() {
const client = new DynamoDB({region: 'ap-southeast-1'});
try {
const results = await client.listTables({});
console.log(results.TableNames.join('n'));
} catch (err) {
console.error(err);
}
}
example();
The time
response says it takes about ~600ms from EC2 to DynamoDB to for the listTables
. Is this normal? 600ms is a really big performance issue for me.
I tried again, this time with a simple standard query with primary key and sort key:
Snippet:
const {DynamoDB} = require('@aws-sdk/client-dynamodb-v2-node');
async function example() {
const client = new DynamoDB({region: 'ap-southeast-1'});
try {
var params = { TableName : 'events', Key: { key: { S: 'wow' } } };
const results = await client.getItem(params);
console.log(results);
} catch (err) {
console.error(err);
}
}
example();
Time:
Same 600ms of response time.
Is this normal for DynamoDB or I am doing something wrong? All snippets I used is from AWS documentation.

The DynamoDB query is only a tiny fraction of the time in your example. Most of it is probably spent with DNS-resolution and initiating an HTTPS-connection to DynamoDB. You'll notice that queries done after the initial one are much faster.
