Excel Hyperlink - Opening a write-reserved document causes excel to freeze

0

I have an excel spreadsheet containing multiple hyperlinks to other documents (Multiple filetypes, whether it's word, excel, .msg from Outlook, etc.). Most of these documents however, are write-reserved.

The problem is, the popup box that prompts you to open as read only or to type in the password is behind the excel program. Basically, upon clicking a link on the excel, it freezes completely. You'd have to go through ALT TAB, cycling through the open programs until you find Word, for example. Then the popup box will show infront of Excel, allowing me to interact with it.

This is tedious, and if I were to share it to others, downright unusable, as not everyone knows how to use ALT TAB. You can't even minimize excel to find the popup box, since it's completely frozen.

How do you make sure that the popup box shows infront of the excel program? Even better, how do you make it so that it only opens the hyperlinked documents as Read Only? I have attempted to catch the hyperlink event in VBA and try to minimize excel, but excel just immediately freezes.

EDIT: This is not a VBA hyperlink, rather I have all the URLs and converted them to a hyperlinked cell (but still through VBA) since it's more 'convenient' to click on the word itself.
