Is there a way to set the encoding type to unicode on GeoPy's Nominatim
Querying with a city name that contains a non-ascii character (e.g. Fürth, Germany) results in a "UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character" error.
So, for example, the following query fails:
geo_locator = Nominatim()
geo_locator.query("Fürth, Germany")
But, if I change the query to "Furth, Germany", it passes.
Encoding the city name to UTF using encode('utf-8') doesn't seem to be supported by the server.
Is there a way to set the encoding to utf-8 on Nominatim's query method?
python-3.x geopy nominatim

Ensure that you're using the latest version of geopy. There's noquery
method in Nominatim. I suppose you meantgeocode
: the sample you provided should work fine withgeocode
(given that you're on python 3). There's a more comprehensive sample available in docs: geopy.readthedocs.io/en/1.18.1/#module-geopy.geocoders
