テクニカルデスメタル （Technical Death Metal）は、ヘヴィメタルの中に含まれる音楽ジャンルの一つであり、デスメタルのサブジャンルの一つ。テクデス （tech-death）と呼ばれることもある。また、プログレッシブデスメタル （Progressive Death Metal）と同一視されることもある。デスメタルの中でも、複雑なリズム、リフ、曲構成に重点が置かれた音楽性がこのジャンルの大きな特徴である。
歴史
デスメタルにおいて、テクニカルな試みは、1980年代後半から1990年代前半にかけて、デス、エイシスト、シニックなどのアメリカ合衆国のデスメタルバンドによってはじめられた[1]。1990年に、ノクターナスがリリースしたデビューアルバム『The Key』の影響で、サルコファーゴは3rdアルバム『The Laws of Scourge』で、ブラックメタル、スラッシュメタルからテクニカルデスメタルへと音楽性を大きく転換させている。エイシストの3rdアルバム『Testimony of the Ancients』とデスの4thアルバム『Human』はその翌年にリリースされている。この中でも、デスの『Human』は90年代のテクニカルデスメタルバンドに強い影響を与えた[1]。1991年、ニューヨークでは、グラインドコアに影響を受けたサフォケイションが、デビューアルバム『Effigy of the Forgotten』をリリースしている。同アルバムは、洗練された楽曲にスピード、ブルータリティを重視したものに仕上がっており、その後、このジャンルで画期的なアルバムとなった[2]。90年代にはエッジ・オブ・サニティのダン・スワノとオーペスのミカエル・オーカーフェルトが互いに影響を与え合い、70年代のプログレッシブ・ロックとデスメタルを組み合わせたスタイルを共に提示している[3]。
ヘヴィメタル雑誌「メタル・エッジ」の元エディターのフィル・フリーマン (Phill Freeman)は、テクニカルデスメタルのサブジャンルについて、"the hidden side of its genre, having more in common with prog-rock and jazz fusion than with the mechanistic, Satan-obsessed grinding that's the music's dominant public image."と述べている[1]。
